Contextual ads are incorporated into a web site after Google Adsense has gained the owner's permission. The ads are created by publishers that are selling products and/or creating brand awareness. The ads which have been created belong to another program sponsored by Google, called Adwords.
Google Adwords and Adsense run hand in hand. After doing a search on Google or one of their partner networks, if the user clicks on an ad then the person who created that ad pays Google a certain amount. This is where the term "pay per click" comes from.
Now the beauty of Adsense is that the person who owns or hosts the web site that the Adwords ads appear on will split the amount of money that Google receives from the creator or publisher of the ad. The percentage of the split does very and it is a well guarded secret what the percentage of the split it, but let's say it's 50% for our purposes.
Google and the host of the web site split the money paid by the publisher. So if a publisher paid .40 per click for his Adwords ad, then the host of the web site who welcomed Adsense can expect to get .20 and Google gets to keep the other .20 every time someone clicks on the ad that appears on the host's web site. So it works like a partnership between Google and web site owners.
In the most relevant way possible Adsense is shown. What does this entail? Well, probably the best way to illustrate this would be through an example. Let's say Mary had a web site featuring women's clothing. Google Adsense once Mary decides to monetize her web site can help her to show ads on her web site that would be related to clothing or to be more specific, women's clothing. The Adsense ads would be appearing specifically for women's shoes if a page of her web site was dedicated to shoes.
So how is the price per click worked out? The Adwords program takes care of this. Adwords publishers work out the value of keywords and place bids on them. A more sought after keyword will result in the publisher paying more for each click. Keywords range anywhere from a few cents to in excess of $50 per click.
It is easy to see how someone with a high traffic web site can generate quite a bit of revenue by teaming up with Google Adsense. Many Internet marketers have put sites on the web with specific content, just to attract the high paying Adsense ads. -
