With the web site owner's permission, Google Adsense places ads on the web site which are targeted to the site's users. Publishers create the ads in order to either sell, or create brand awareness. The ads that are created are called Adwords and they are also a Google sponsored program.
Google Adwords and Adsense operate in parallel. The person who created the ad pays Google a predetermined price every time someone who does a search on Google or one of their affiliate networks clicks on one of the sponsored ads. 'Pay per click' is the term that was coined for this.
Where Adsense comes into its own, is that the web site owner or host receives a portion of the money that Google has received from the creator of the Adwords ad. Although the percentage split is a well guarded secret, for our purposes we can work on 50%.
For example if the Adwords ad generates .40 per click, then the Adsense program pays the web site host .20 when the ad is clicked on their web site. The other .20 is kept by Google. This indicates how the web site owners and Google are partners in this scheme.
In the most relevant way possible Adsense is shown. What does this entail? Well, probably this can be illustrated best through an example. Let's assume a website featuring women's clothing that is owned by Mary. If Mary decided to make money through her web site with Google Adsense, then the ads that would be shown on her web site would be related to clothing or women's clothing to be more precise. In her web site if shoes are dedicated to a particular page, then on that page there would be Adsense ads appearing for women's shoes.
So how is the price per click determined? This is where the Adwords side of the equation kicks in. Publishers of Adwords bid on keywords. The more lucrative or sought after a keyword is, the more the publisher will be willing to pay for each click. Anywhere from a few cents to in excess of $50 per click is what these keywords range from.
It is easy to see how someone with a high traffic web site can generate quite a bit of revenue by teaming up with Google Adsense. Many Internet marketers have put sites on the web with specific content, just to attract the high paying Adsense ads. -
